Manchester United started their title defence in some style by thumping Swansea City 4-1 at their own den. Robin Van Persie once again grabbed the limelight with a brace while Danny Welbeck equalled his last season's goal tally in a single game.
This performance might have taken some light out of Wayne Rooney saga which has been the main discussion point at Old Trafford this summer. Premier League rivals Chelsea are making their intentions clear every other day.
The want-away striker, an Everton academy graduate, who came from the bench to make his mark against Swansea still remains unsettled at Manchester United. He played crucial role in United's two goals. First it was his his run made it easy for Van Persie to complete his double while his pass created Welbeck's goal later. Despite Rooney's heroics and David Moyes' praise for the star striker, Rooney will remain as number 2 in striking department as Van Persie is at his peak scoring goals for fun.

Rooney is a natural number 10, a role which does not exist in the
4-3-3 formation which is going to be the number one formation for United
in the upcoming months. Rooney can also be used in a variety of roles
due to his versatility, but he is a striker basically and will not be
happy with a bit part role in the team. He was deployed in various
positions including central midfielder last season, and that seems to
have unsettled the player for a second time. What if Rooney leaves United, do they have other alternatives for the number 10 role? It's a no brainer that he will be a valuable addition to any other team, but what impact it will have on United?
In Japanese International Shinji Kagawa, United boast Asia's best player in their ranks. Kagawa was a huge success in a similar role at Borussia Dortmund in Bundesliga, and eventually that paved the way for his entry into Premier League giants.
Kagawa was used in a left attacking role last season and will be waiting for a chance at number 10 to prove his worth and quality. His energy, creativity and cleverness might replace Rooney's ferocity and class with ease as well.
Kagawa possess the control and skills to succeed in a number 10 role at United even if he isn't athletic enough to displace Rooney. Rooney might be a regular goalscorer which Kagawa isn't, but Kagawa won't be a mismatch at the number 10 role if that proposition comes up anytime. His superior passing can be exploited by the Red Devils as well.
Even if Rooney bids adieu to Manchester United they will have their task cut out in searching for a replacement as they already have one in their ranks. In Kagawa they have a ready made replacement, but the main reason is they do not want to strengthen a Premier League rival by gifting a player of Wayne Rooney.
I believe that if an offer comes from abroad (read Real Madrid), United will be happy to accept that and will be ready to unleash the Asian star, who is waiting for his chance.
