Do Chelsea need Willian?

Willian’s future has been a subject that has appeared to bounce off in different directions this week.
It started with Liverpool lodging a formal bid of £25 million for the Anzhi Makhachkala midfielder.
Brendan Rodger’s side seemed confident of sealing his signature, but ended up seeing their attempts fall flat when Tottenham arrived on the scene.

Earlier on today the Brazil international passed a medical at Tottenham where a club record deal of £30 million looked to be as good as done until Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea came in with a last minute bid to snare the Brazilian out of their London rival’s clutches.
In a sense it feels like this is a deadline day war.
Liverpool can’t offer him European football, so he turned to Tottenham who can offer him Europa League football, and now Chelsea have come into the fold they can go one better still and offer him Champions League football.
Out of the three English teams that have been involved in the transfer of Willian, Chelsea are currently the one who possess the strongest midfield.
With their attacking midfield three from last season, Juan Mata, Oscar and Eden Hazard looking to come back stronger with Kevin De Bruyne back from his loan spell at Werder Bremen and Andre Schurrle arriving from Bayer Leverkusen, Chelsea certainly don’t lack options in that depart.
As for the defensive midfield two they Frank Lampard, Ramires and John Obi Mikel still there from last year and on top of that they have Michael Essien back from his loan spell at Real Madrid and new signing Marco Van Ginkel arriving from Vitesse Arnhem.
Tottenham lost Clint Dempsey this summer to Seattle Sounders, so they do have a genuine need for an attacking midfielder to enter their ranks – especially if Gareth Bale is on the verge of leaving for Real Madrid.
Tottenham have spent big this summer already bringing in the likes of Paulinho from Corinthians, Nacer Chadli from FC Twente, Etienne Capou from Toulous and prolific Spanish stiker Roberto Soldado from Valencia.
With Andre Villas Boas’ determination to step their game up from last season they are already looking like a team that want to enter the title race.
Previously in the last month Jose Mourinho identified that the only area of his squad he was looking to add to was his strike force and suggested that Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney was his only target, which makes you wonder what his true intentions on this plot for Willian are.
Hopefully this last minute move from Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea to hijack Tottenham’s deal for Willian isn’t purely so that he can prevent Spurs from bolstering their squad any further.
