Manchester United have been dealt a blow in their ongoing
pursuit of Ander Herrera, after Athletic Bilbao president Josu Urrutia
claimed the midfielder would not be leavin
g the club in January, reports Sky Sports.
The 24-year-old was heavily linked with a move to England during the summer, but the Premier League champions were reluctant to meet the player's £30.5million release clause.
So far, David Moyes has added only Marouane Fellaini to his Old Trafford ranks since succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson as Red Devils manager in July.
And, recent speculation has suggested that he's ready to renew interest in the former Spain U21 international, when the transfer window reopens in the New Year, as the former Everton boss looks to further strengthen his new squad.
However, Urrutia is adamant that Herrera will not be leaving San Mames any time soon, and has urged the player to refocus his attention on helping deliver a successful campaign for Athletic Bilbao in 2013/14.
"I don't know what other teams will do, but I consider the Herrera issue to be closed," he told a packed press conference.
"Ander has a contract until 2016. All players have to focus on giving Athletic all you can give."
